Newbury Community Power Update July 2025

Newbury residents voted for Newbury Community Power in March 2024 with the goal of reducing energy costs and increasing options for renewable energy usage.

In January 2025, the Select Board voted to pause the launch of Newbury Community Power due to unanticipated changing market conditions.

Eversource announced a rate increase as of August 1st, 2025, and the rates for Community Power Coalition of New Hampshire (CPCNH) Merrimack County for the same period are even higher (see below). The Select Board will not move forward with Newbury Community Power unless CPCNH Merrimack County Community Power rates offer residents and small businesses savings.

In the meantime, residents and small businesses can “opt in” to CPCNH Merrimack County Community Power on an individual basis. Simply click this link and follow the enrollment instructions on the Merrimack County Community Power website. In the “Get Started” box select “Eversource” and “Merrimack, County of”.

Rate Changes as of August 1st 2025:

As of August 1st, Eversource electricity supply rate (actual cost of the electricity coming into your home or business) will increase from 8.9c per kWh to 11.2c per kWh.

As of August 1st, CPCNH Merrimack County Community Power supply rate will increase from 9.7c per kWh to 13.42c per kWh.

WindowDressers brings community volunteers of all economic and social situations together to improve the warmth and comfort of interior spaces, lower heating costs, and reduce carbon dioxide pollution by producing low-cost insulating window inserts that function as custom, interior-mounted storm windows.

Our inserts are constructed of custom-made pine frames wrapped in two layers of tightly-sealed, clear plastic film and finished with a compressible foam gasket. The inserts are installed inside of your existing window with no fasteners required. They function like interior storm windows.

Newbury Community Power

Community Power is a New Hampshire program that allows municipalities to procure electricity on behalf of its residents and small businesses with the objectives of 1) reducing energy costs and 2) increasing options for renewable energy usage.

Newbury Community Power gives residents and small businesses the option to choose whether their electricity is supplied by their current provider (i.e., Eversource) or through an alternative, and often more competitively priced provider. Energy delivery (i.e., wires and poles) will continue to be provided and supported by Eversource.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • A typical household can save as much as 10% per year on heating and cooling by turning the thermostat down 7-10 degrees for 8 hours a day in fall and winter (up in spring and summer).

  • If your hot water tank is warm to the touch, consider insulating it to save 7-16% annually in water heating costs.

  • Many consumer electronics continue to draw power even when they are switched off which could add 10% to your monthly utility bill. Switch to advanced power strips that prevent electronics from drawing power when not in use.
